I am a native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and have been making photographs for over 25 years. I first began as an early teen, and somewhere along the line decided that photography was what I wanted to do in life. I studied Fine Art Photography at Colorado Mountain College and earned an Associates Degree from the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver in 1990.
Although I make a living in the commercial realm of photography, artistic self-expression is still something very important to me. Mostly, this desire finds an outlet in my landscape photography. Ever since I first picked up a camera I have been fascinated with capturing the natural world in all its variety of shapes, textures and quality of light. One of my favorite areas to photograph is the desert southwest. I enjoy the unique rock formations, slot canyons, and archaeological ruins that are abundant in this area. It has provided endless inspiration.
I feel that my work has always been about light, form, and texture. I try to capture the essence of the beauty and mystery I see and convey that to the viewer. In my slot canyon work in particular, I enjoy making more abstract images where a sense of scale, or even up and down, is lost, and the viewer can just study the lights’ interplay on the sandstone walls of the canyon. They become almost like nudes. They are pure light, form and texture.
The addition of digital cameras and Photoshop has given me a powerful creative outlet, and more freedom to express myself. I find that I’m interpreting my photographs in new ways, and I’m having fun exploring some of the possibilities of a new medium. I have become interested in taking a more hands-on approach with the final image. Now I look at the image and start thinking of where I want to go with it. I enjoy the sense of freedom and the ability to take a much less literal approach in the representation of my subject matter. The work I’ve recently done with native rock art and petroglyphs is a great example because it allows the viewer to fully appreciate the beauty.
I look forward to continually learning more, and developing my vision and craft as an artist. It is this life-long pursuit that really keeps me engaged and enthralled with the craft of photography.
